Mavros uses very high purity OCC (Ohno Continuous Casting) copper conductors. The OCC process is named after professor Atsumi Ohno, who in the late 1970s, discovered that by heating the drawing mould to a higher temperature than the molten copper you intend to cast, then cooling it soon after, the result is one long, high purity (99.9997%) metal crystal.

These high-purity monocrystal conductors are used in a multi-stranded layout, wrapped in individual low-loss microporous PTFE (Teflon™) insulators, and twisted to help lower electromagnetic interference. The four separate conductors are then wrapped in cotton, an additional layer paper, then wraps the assembly in PVC and shrouds it in an outer black cotton sleeve.

VTX Wire Geometry
Long known for ultra-complex wire geometries which measurably improve conductivity and desirable characteristics, Shunyata has developed a new geometry which greatly reduces the so-called “skin-effect”. Skin-effect is a distortion caused by differing speeds of conductivity between the centre of the conductor (where the bass travels) and the outer part or skin of the conductor where the midrange and treble travel. Skin-effect plagues both stranded and solid core wire, causing smearing, timing and phase errors, in some cases even changes in tonal balance. The ideal conductor is a hollow tube, but this is wildly impractical in the real world, so using DTCD analysis, Shunyata created a new type of wire geometry which is a “virtual tube” greatly reducing skin effect and improving conductivity.
